THEORY:
Definition of team – a simple definition of what a team is.
The denotative meaning of the word team is “cooperatively functioning group: a number
of people organized to function cooperatively as a group”.
But of all the ideas out there regarding the definition of team, most fall within one of two
definitions:
· a group of people with a goal
· a group of people who work well together
We have found that whichever definition of team is used by an
individual depends upon their situation. A team leader is likely to go with the first while a
team member is more likely to go with the second.
Definition of team building – a simple definition of what team building is.
This is a fairly general term that is used in a number of different ways. It can cover either
what you are trying to achieve or how you are trying to achieve it – or both! The
following cover most of the options:
Team building is developing working relationships.
Team building is improving the performance of the team.
Team building is about improving motivation, communication, support and trust within
a team.
The definition we prefer is:
Improving team performance by developing team working skills by using any appropriate
method.
It is a fairly general definition but it encompasses all of the common definitions.
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs – some great insights as to what motivates people. Maslow is
best known for his Hierarchy of Needs. This is a brief overview of the content of his
theory (to be discussed during the team building).
UI – UC – it is the short hand for a model covering the levels of skill that an individual can
have with regard to a skill. The initials stand for Unconscious Incompetence to
Unconscious Competence (to be discussed during the team building).
